Ancient Northern AZ

The American Southwest is home to one of the richest and best-preserved archaeological and cultural legacies to be found in the United States.  Not only does the dry climate of our area serve to preserve even the most delicate of artifacts, but the diligent work of a few visionaries over the last century, such as Dr. Harold Colton who founded the Museum of Northern Arizona, helped to make sure these historical treasures were preserved for future generations.

The area around Flagstaff, and indeed within the city limits of Flagstaff itself, is a wealth of archaeological sites and National Monuments that are open to the public.  To the south of Flagstaff in the Verde Valley is Montezuma's Castle, one of the Southwest's most famous and best-preserved cliff dwellings.  In taking a day-trip to the Verde Valley you can also visit Montezuma's Well and Tuzigoot.  Near to Sunset Crater National Monument, just to the Northeast of Flagstaff is Wupatki National Monument which is comprised of the main Wupatki ruin, as well as the smaller ruins of Wukoki and Lomaki which are all open to the public.
